MarK Milly releases EP "Now and Later"

Mark Milly doesn't stop dropping quality projects. His latest is an EP called Now and Later. I'm starting to delve into this latest release, and so far my favorite track is "The Sun". The opening song on his project tells a tale of a young woman in a hectic relationship with a drug dealer. Download his release here.

Kanye West Debuts New Songs for Facebook

Kanye West never ceases to amaze me. His determination to be an authentic artist is an inspiration. How many times do our favorite artist get caught up in the hype, and become diluted because of a  record labels hold, or a fans perception of how they should act. Kanye West has always passionately stayed true to himself. Even in his most negative moments, he triumphs. He reminds me of the teacher you may have had, that was just "Fresh As Shit". We Watch him go through pitfalls, and we learn from his episodes.People like Kanye West save lives. So many kids, and adults I know aren't interested in knowledge, or bettering themselves. Kanye West makes "knowledge of self" cool by juxtaposing topics that may not be put together in real time.  Hip Hop can be used as a platform to speak to a younger generation, and give them hope. He debuts some of his new material to Facebook staff recently, and the song "Chain Heavy" has already struck me. He raps " I keep that g.o.a.t. book on an ottoman, and wrote hooks about slaves who was slaughtered in the 1800's."

In Search Of... Changed My Life

I was in 8th grade when my life changed. For music enthusiasts we all have that album that changed our lives, and we will talk about it forever. Anybody that knows me, knows that I get a lot of my style sensibilities, and out-look on life, from my uncle Travis. Uncle Travis is a fashion-lover, music enthusiast, and semi-political theorist. I grew up being that weird kid who listened to music. While my parents argued I'd turn up the music, and write my own rhymes. It's always been my favorite thing to get lost in melodies, and lose track of time.

One day the whole family was out, and we were riding around in uncle Travis's yellow Ford  Mustang. He had punk-inspired black dice hanging in his rear-view mirror, that had spikes around them. While riding shot-gun, I noticed a album cover under the seat. It had transparent stars all around it, and Shay Haley ( N.E.R.D band-member) was on the couch playing PlayStation. It also had a brain logo, which i thought was pretty sweet. I immediately asked Uncle Travis what it was, and he said, "It's Pharrell's group, its really good, you can have it" . I'm a "hip-hop head", but I always loved rock, and alternative music. When me, and my sister visited my cousin Shana, in the suburbs of  Columbia, Maryland, we always played Smashmouth, and  3 Doors Down. This cd named In Search Of.... encompassed everything. The writing was still hard-core, and had a hip-hop edge to it, but it was just as much R&B, Soul, and Rock. I could relate to the mixture of suburban/hood culture vibe. I blasted this album for months. My favorite track from the album, "Provider" tells the  story of a young man, on a quest to make a name, and provide for himself. The bridge was the best part.
" Someday, Someday, this will be over
We'll raise a family
I'll get a job and I'll be a voter
And if I die
It will change you
Change you
I watch over a family
But only as an angel "

I followed the N.E.R.D dress code. I had Nike dunks. I threw up the Star Trek hand sign. N.E.R.D was my RUN-DMC. This was way before the N.E.R.D mania that has plagued this generation. When The Neptunes Presents... The Clones was released, My friends and I sat in my basement playing the DVD, and CD everyday after high-school. It was either that, or Rap City: The Basement. We ordered chinese food from China Wok, and delayed our homework as much as possible.

While Simultaneously having an underground edge, Pharrell Williams and, the frontman of N.E.R.D, and Chad , together The Neptunes were also hip-hops biggest producers. They came up in the ranks through pioneering musician Teddy Riley. After their work with Blackstreet, and other names like Mase, and N.O.R.E. , they began to take over. Hell, they had hits out-side of hip-hop, with Britney Spears "I'm a slave for you", and most of Justin Timberlake's first solo album Justified. Whether you knew it or not, you were a fan of that Neptunes sound, which Jay-z relied on for some of his hottest singles, including " I Just Wanna Love Ya ( Give It To Me), and  "Excuse Me Miss".

N.E.R.D definitely left their footprint on this generation. Their style, and music opened doors for artists like  Kanye West, and Lupe Fiasco. They are the current influence behind the "Black Hipster Scene", and they have inspired kids to start their own clothing lines, and live out their dreams.Of course, they were influenced by A Tribe Called Quest, Steely Dan, The Beatles, Outkast, and other great musicians. In Search Of..., and the concept of No One Ever Really Dies further kicked the door in, and is certainly a classic album.

This article by Al Shipley (Government Names) in the Baltimore City Paper is a great summary on Baltimore Hip-Hop scene right now.

Quote from the aritcle:

"Maybe artists here in Baltimore, for a lack of a better term, almost have a messiah complex, there's this mindset that there's gonna be this one artist that's gonna open the door for everyone." - Toure'

I honestly think that Baltimore Hip-Hop is changing, and there is a host of younger individuals changing the sound. Baltimore is becoming more cultured, and we are growing. We'll see very soon.

A New Side Hustle: Meter Stalking

As most of you know by now, I work in Fells Point. One thing people despise in Baltimore, or pretty much everywhere  is paying for parking. The process is fairly simple. You walk up to a meter, which are located all over downtown, and pay about 1 dollar per hour, and receive your ticket. It's semi-annoying, and the officers who oversee it are even more annoying. Why can't you find a better job, than the parking meter overseer? It just screams SNITCH. Anyways, In downtown Baltimore, you can see a junkie, or two, or five running around scrambling for change from your average citizens. Every once in a while they can get some money from a stranger, or some local, having a nice day, who feels like giving back. Along with begging for change, Junkies have side-hustles. These can include, but are not limited too: Washing&Waxing Cars/ Detailing&Fixing Cars/ Selling Stolen Merchandise/ Pretending to be crippled , or handicapped. I could continue, but you get the idea.  Well, while I have been working, I've seen junkies,  run up to a person who is leaving their parking space whom hasn't used up all of their time, and ask for the ticket. They plan to sell this ticket to a person who doesn't want to spend time, and money at the "stupid machine" at a discounted price. I think this is one of the most genius Side Hustles ever. Wherever you see a need, you can find a way to capitalize on it.

PS: I know every less-fortunate person, is not a junkie, but in the cases I've seen "Junkies" ( drug addicts), are using this hustle, as a means to obtain a "Fix".

UP CLOSE: W/ Greenspan

Greenspan  is an emcee  that I’ve seen perform plenty of times on the DMV circuit. He’s charismatic with a good flow, and he manages to capture your attention for more than a minute, unlike some of his peers. He’s opened up for acts like Wale, Wiz Khalifa, and The Clipse. True Hip-Hop fans will take notice, when something of substance is in the air. The sequel to his Got Green series,  coming July 12th, is sure to heat up the streets of the DMV and beyond. - Ryan Lyons

Does the name Greenspan, have any relation to Alan Greenspan, ( the chairman for the Federal Reserve)? If so, what’s the inspiration behind that?

Initially, yes. Alan Greenspan is the former chairman of the federal reserve of US.. My company, FEDERAL Reserve Music is based on the concept of 'Economic Self-Interest'... If I'm financially "straight," then I can have the opportunity to invest and/or create opportunities and be a blessing to someone else...
I must say the track “Calling Me” with production from DJ Booman, is a smooth track! Can we expect to hear more like this on Got Green 2?

Yes.. I have a few records with that "Groove." That's what I call it... that "Groove!!"

You guys went to SWSX last year right? How was that experience?

I went in 2009 and 2010.. 2009 was a life changing experience and it opened my eyes to so much opportunity.

“I don't fabricate anything I sing... That's why you never hear a whole-lot of dope and gun slinging in my music” - Greenspan

What has your life in Baltimore been like?

A learning experience...

Do you plan on going more in depth about your personal life on this mix-tape? Any Feature’s ( production, and artist’s)?

I always go deep into my personal life.  Each song/story is based on personal experiences.  I don't fabricate anything I sing... That's why you never hear a whole-lot of dope and gun slinging in my music...Got Green Vol. 2 has Features from Phil Ade, Karron Johnson, and K Holloway, Production from Live Beats, Mizfitz Soundz, Pretty, and a few guests the intro and breaks.

What does Greenspan do besides rap? Any other hobbies  or interests?

Luv and smile :)

Who do you think has had the most influence on you as an artist? What music do you listen to?

Marvin Gaye, Life and Experience

We’ve had a lot of emcees, claim to be “Baltimore’s savior”, the “best thing out” etc. Do you have an angle? How are you playing this game?

ummm, No. I just smile :)
