N.E.R.D. MTV Live Sessions

Pictured: Pharrell Williams circa 2002

I must say that as a N.E.R.D fan, I've been nervous about the direction of their upcoming album, Nothing. After this release of their live show with MTV I feel a little better. This group is always good at improvisation, and their slow-tempo joints are always my favorites. The song titled, "Help Me" sounds great with Pharrell giving his best James Brown grunt. Check it out below:

City and Poly Education Standards Scrutinized

 Pictured: City High School

A new article in the Baltimore Sun goes into detail about City, and Poly - two Baltimore public schools which currently fall into an unsatisfying rating according to Baltimore schools CEO Andrés Alonso.  I’ve, personally, attended Baltimore City Public Schools throughout my life, and  I consider the education to be "Comme Ci, Comme Ça" . There are some great teachers present , but our children can be pushed further. I also believe that the children have to want an education. Some students see their parents struggle financially having experienced the same education. We need more role-models, and field trips to organizations outside of the city. Students need experiences that will force them to dream beyond their 4-block radius. - Ryan Lyons

Statistics from article:

"Of the students who graduated in the Class of 2003, 46 percent from Poly and 39 percent from City had earned a degree from a two- or four-year college six years later, rates that top school officials concede are far too low." - Liz Bowie of The Baltimore Sun

Andre 3000 - "I Do"

Hearing new Andre 3000, is like getting a call from Gramma saying she’s gonna cook dinner. It’s like the best part of the day. I’m tired of being teased though, and since I have this platform I’m gonna beg.

Dear  Andre 3000,

We don’t want much. We know you got it in you. We just want an album. We’ve cherished  all the Outkast records, The Love Below, and your various leaks, and features here and there throughout the year, but we want another album. I’ve grown up on your music, and your one of the emcees that I’m most proud to recite lyrics from. We’re all gonna buy it. So just give us a mixtape, or something. Shit.

Sincerely,

Ryan Lyons

Justus - From Us With Love

Justus blesses us with a mix-tape From Us With Love. I took the time to listen tonight, and they’ve definitely got a good mix of chill, and uptempo joints on the tape. I think they could have left some of the songs off the mix-tape, but you can definitely see they’re sound is growing. I’m glad to see some cool up and comers in the city. That was a smooth ass intro too!

Good Jams:

“From Us” (Intro)

“YaeYaeYae”

“Pull Your Hair” (Featuring Epik)

“Rollin’”

La Roux Rises

Lets face it, there’s a new face on the scene.  And no they  don’t have Diplo, or Blaqstarr, but the music’s just as dangerous, and electric. La Roux is the name, and unless you’ve been hiding behind MT.Rushmore, you’ve heard some of their hits. La Roux is a British duo encompassing a singer/co-writer/keyboardist  Elly Jackson, and a co-writer/pianist Ben Langmaid. Bulletproof , the single from their self-titled album La Roux, which debuted in the U.K in 2008, has steadily risen up the U.S billboards, as well as the U.K. Other singles from the album including I'm Not Your Toy, and In for the Kill have seen similar success. The self-proclaimed androgynous front-woman Elly Jackson, is only 22 years old. With a head full of red-hair, her voice stands-out in a similar fashion. But What’s different about La Roux?  The music isn’t only sonically appealing. Elly Jackson’s poignant lyrics are about as truthful as you can get. Im Not A Toy speaks volumes about relationships that are purely for convenience - “it’s all false love and affection, you don’t like me you just like the attention”. Don’t believe the hype? You’ll see in due time. - Ryan Lyons

Kanye West debuts "Portrait Of Power" on MTV

Kanye West continues to inspire us, by being creative, and taking risks. His latest video, for his leading single Power from his tentatively titled album Dark Twisted Fantasy is actually not a video at all. It’s a 90 second moving painting! I just had a twitter rant about how i felt it should have been a regular video. Hip-Hop is an art-form that is rooted in the inner-city, so it just feels classic to me in that arena. However I do appreciate what Kanye is doing for hip-hop though. It's actually a beautiful piece of Pop Art, once you get past the fact that it's not a music video. All in All, We love Ye'. He’s taking Hip-Hop to another place, and showing that our music doesn’t have to have boundaries. We can stretch it, as far as our imagination takes us. This 90 second painting has left us wanting more. Please don’t have us waiting long ye’.

Check out the video below, and comment your thoughts!

Baltimore roads being repaired for Grand Prix

In approximately one year from now, Grand Prix auto racing will be coming to Baltimore, Maryland. In order for this to happen roads have to be repaired to secure our streets, and their safety. Repairs will cost over 5 million. This should be great for Baltimore's economy! I wish they were fixing these roads before this, but it makes sense that money is projected to come in as a result of this venture.

Here are the projected numbers:

The Grand Prix is expected to attract more than 100,000 visitors to Baltimore, inject $70 million into the local economy, generate $7 million in tax dollars and create nearly 2,000 jobs.- Via WJZ

Baltimore Racing Development President, Jay Davidson, talks about the Baltimore Grand Prix

JD - Anti-Social

I don't just check emails, and post rappers. I actually search for dope stuff to post on ABLT. JD is a upcoming rapper from the Cherry Hill section of Baltimore. He's been featured on allbmorehiphop, and Datpiff. I took the chance to listen to his 2009 release Anti-Social. I must say that JD has superstar potential. His stuff reminds me of  an early Beanie Sigel.  The mix-tape also has notable features from local artists you may have heard before including 100 grandman, Smash, Supe and Nummy. Stay tuned to hear new music from him soon!

Take a listen to my favorite joints from his mixtape below:

"Represent" feat Supe and Nummy, "Go Off" feat Nummy, "Hood Shit", "Flight School Freestyle"

It aint nothin like ghetto love
Sometimes I reminisce on how the ghetto was
When my mind was on the music, not selling drugs
Thought my eye was on the future, but it never was
So here we are now
but on the bright side, I know my niggas all down
and we gon' do it up, until we fall down
them niggas know wassup, they wit it cross town
Nigga it's a struggle everywhere, a jungle everywhere
You do a overnight, or on the humble anywhere
But im from the more, where its a gun on every stair
Nigga once its heavy stares shit can come from anywhere
Man I  swear I wish that i could stay away
Cuz I don't think that I was made to stay
These my niggas from when I was gettin' layaway
So If I go they commin wit me Ima make a way - JD on  "Hood Shit"

Beanie Sigel & Freeway In Baltimore

I missed this show. Beanie Sigel is one of my favorites, but he takes aim at Jay-z as usual these days. Beans is a street poet who's never lost his essence as a recording artist. He's definitely hurt about this Rocafella situation. Can't we all just get along!!!I miss the good days.

Trey R - " Look Up"

I actually help manage Trey R. The body of work he's been coming up with sounds great. I think he's got something different to add to our scene. A lot of this music has a great sound. Still Searching is going to be a great project, so keep your ears open, and your eyes peeled.
